KPN's 5G network supports KLG Europe in warehouse automation
22 April 2025At KLG Europe, we continuously invest in innovation — not because we have to, but because it helps us and our customers move forward. In our warehouse in Waalwijk, we are now fully engaged with autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). Thanks to a successful collaboration with KPN and the implementation of a hybrid 5G network, we’re taking a major step toward a future-proof, automated, and safe working environment.

Why 5G? Prioritizing safety and reliability
In a logistics environment where large, heavy vehicles operate daily, safety is essential. Our AGVs weigh several tons and move autonomously through the warehouse. Full control and real-time intervention are crucial. With the hybrid 5G network we’ve implemented in collaboration with KPN, we now have the speed and reliability we need — even during peak moments. A hiccup in connectivity can have major consequences, but 5G allows us to minimize that risk.
From pilot to scaling up
We started over a year ago with a pilot project: five AGVs operating on our own hybrid 5G network. The test phase exceeded expectations. The connection remained stable, processes ran more smoothly, and workplace safety improved significantly. That success marked the perfect moment to scale up. We now have ten large AGVs in operation, with several smaller units ready for implementation. And this is only the beginning.
Our benefits
The benefits of this technology are clearly reflected in our daily operations:
- Greater continuity and reliability in our processes
- Fewer disruptions and less downtime due to network issues
- Improved safety on the warehouse floor
- More efficient use of space and personnel
- More predictable planning and output
- Enhanced reputation as an innovative partner for our customers and clients
Working efficiently and safely
Thanks to the precision of the 5G network, our AGVs can now navigate with far greater accuracy. Where colleagues previously had to keep a distance of several dozen meters from the vehicles, a range of just 1 to 5 meters is now sufficient. This allows for much more flexibility and efficient use of space in the warehouse.
Connectivity issues caused by unreliable Wi-Fi are also a thing of the past. Previously, a technician had to be called in when a vehicle stopped unexpectedly, temporarily halting the process. Now, we can respond instantly and continue operations without disruption.
Smarter control through reliable data
Another major advantage is the quality of the data. With a more stable connection, our output data has become significantly more reliable. This allows us to plan and report with even greater accuracy, ensuring we meet the agreed-upon KPIs with our customers more consistently.
Collaboration with KPN
We are very satisfied with our collaboration with KPN. Their commitment, technical expertise, and proactive support made all the difference during the rollout. Our technical teams work confidently alongside their specialists — and the results speak for themselves.
At KLG Europe, we believe in the power of technology to make our work better, safer, and smarter. The move to a hybrid 5G network is a great example of that vision in action. And we’re not stopping here — we will continue to innovate, always with a focus on both people and processes.
