What does customs clearance mean according to KLG?

Customs clearance, also known as import compliance or the release of customs goods, is the formal declaration and release of goods imported from non-EU countries into free circulation. The customs authorities first assess the declaration, accompanying documents, value and HS codes to determine applicable import duties and taxes. Only after payment and approval can goods enter the EU’s free market.

You will need to provide documents such as a commercial invoice, HS code(s), waybill, packing list, and possibly certificates of origin or permits. KLG Europe assists with the declaration process once the proper assignment and authorization are received. Thanks to our direct collaboration with Dutch customs and the use of advanced electronic systems, customs clearance is handled quickly and reliably.

How does the customs clearance process work?

The following:

  1. First comes the assignment and authorization from your company. Then we proceed with collecting the required documentation, such as the commercial invoice, waybill, packing list and certificates of origin.

  2. Verification and validation: checking that all data is correct and complete.

  3. Submitting the declaration: a KLG Europe customs agent handles this through electronic systems.

  4. Calculation of duties and taxes: where applicable, including import duties, VAT, excise, agricultural levies or other charges.

  5. Inspection: in case of selection or suspicion, customs may conduct physical checks.

  6. Payment: after approval, payment is made to customs.

  7. Release of goods: once cleared, the goods can be used or sold within the EU market.

KLG Europe manages the entire customs clearance process from A to Z within our own organization, using our own transport resources. This ensures a smooth handling from start to finish.

How long does customs clearance take?

With complete documentation and standard goods, customs clearance can be completed within a few hours. In most cases, however, it takes one to three working days. Complex shipments or additional inspections may cause delays. In practice, our lead times remain consistently low thanks to KLG Europe’s internal processes and direct lines with local authorities.
